Dessert table vs. A Single Cake

Dessert tables are all the rage right now in the world of weddings. The picturesque table full of treats ranging from mini pies to cookies to brownies and with a tiered cake in the center. But, are dessert tables the right way to go. Here are a few things to consider when deciding if a dessert table is right for your wedding.

They are more expensive! The most common misconception is that you save money because you have a smaller cake and then include less expensive desserts. While that's great in theory, it's not reality. If you are having a dessert table at your reception I do recommend decreasing the size of the cake, by a little bit, but no more than 10-15% of your guest count. Why? Because people will still eat the cake! It's a wedding and everyone comes anticipating the cake for dessert. A few guests might skip the cake altogether, but not many. While the price of a cookie or brownie is less then the price of the cake, you have to purchase more. When you go to a buffet, don't you like to take a little sample of everything? Yep...well, so does everyone else. If you only have a cake then most people will choose one slice. But, if you have multiple desserts, most people will choose several desserts to eat, meaning you have to purchase more of those little filler desserts.
Will you still like this idea in 20 years? Trends are great today, but what about tomorrow? Do you ever look back on weddings from the past and wonder what in the world people were thinking? Think about yourself in the future. When you are showing your kids your wedding photos would you still be pleased showcasing an album with multiple small desserts rather than a grand cake? For some brides, this might be an issue while others many not be concerned.
Does your venue have the room? Consider your reception venue. What tables will you be using? If your venue uses a round table for the desserts it may not accommodate and dessert table. You will need a larger rectangle table. Consider availability and placement of that table, as well as how you will decorate and display multiple desserts (again, this could increase the price of your decorations if you need more dessert stands).

Working the Bridal Extravaganza!

Engagement season is officially over and planning season has now begun! Congratulations! There is no better way to begin your planning then by attending the Austin Bridal Extravaganza!! It's this Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5:00 pm at the Palmer Event Center!

The show is a little huge, a little overwhelming, and a lot of fun!! Let me share with a few tips to get the most out of the show and not feel like a deer in the headlights while doing it.

Organize your needs. More then likely you just got engaged. Need a venue? Then that's your top priority. Got that, but still need everything else...then your first goal is to find a photographer and caterer. After that you need cakes and flowers. Followed by Music and invitations.
Come early and don't eat! You will need the full time there, so arrive early and be one of the first in the door. That way you aren't rushing. I know it's tempting to enjoy a nice lunch with your girlfriends prior to the show, but avoid that. Every caterer and baker will have food...and you will want to eat it. So come hungry...I promise, you will leave full.
Start from one end and work your way down the rows. You don't want to miss anything.
Spend the most time with your top priority booths and skip those you have. Skips booths of vendors you already have. Get to know the vendors of the booths you need. Ask questions, get pricing and information, schedule a consultation.
Collect all needed info. Even if you aren't ready to book your florist yet, still grab there info and ask a few questions. This will help you later on in your wedding planning. Bring two bags, a yes bag and a no bag. After talking to the vendors if you like them and they are in your budget put them in your yes bag. If you really like them, star their brochure. You won't remember everything after the show, so notes are great! If you weren't a good fit for them then place their information in your no bag. Hang onto it, you never know what will happen down the road.
Now go out to eat. Enjoy a margarita and appetizer with your girls and relax!
Go through your "yes" bag. Organize all the brochures by category. Research your top need and find 3 vendors to meet. Schedule their meetings the same week and make a decision that week. Then, when it's time, do the same thing with the other vendors.
