Fun Wedding Facts!

I always love to research and study and find out why we have certain traditions and rituals.  Here are a few fun facts about wedding cakes I recently came across:

• The tradition of wedding cakes started in Ancient Rome where a loaf of bread was broken over the bride's head for good fertility.
• The custom of the tiered wedding cake started because of a game where the bride and groom would attempt to kiss over a high cake without knocking it over.

• The tradition of making a cake white was started in the Victorian era to symbolize purity.
• The cake topper originated from a baker's daughter who was getting married.  The daughter asked her dad to make a symbol showcasing their love.  He created a replica of the couple to put on the top of the cake.
• Why do we smash cake in the bride's face?  In some cultures wedding cake was originally thrown at bride's to symbolize fertility.
• Pieces of wedding cake were historically put under the pillows of single girls in hopes that they would dream about their future husbands.
